cH y~Mi _ AvMZ:
A. Tim, tell us what the
spring project is all about?
B. Well, it’s north Bengal,
in the south west of Siliguri and basically it’s a number of what we call
biomes. Biomes are very big structures made of transparent hexagons on a steel
framework. And inside these huge biomes we grow different types of plants, from
all over the world ranging from hot regions, temperate and cold regions. The
temperature and amount of water in the air in each biome is controlled.
So that all plants can grow.
A. Is it a theme park?
B. No. Here you learn about
the natural environment.
A. Does it have an educational
objective?
B. Absolutely. It makes people
think about the relationship between plants and people.
A. So, you mean ecotourism?
|
|
B. Yes, if we mean a form of
tourism that increases our understanding of the natural environment.
A. Do you think there are any
problems?
B. Yes, in some ways. The
number of visitors has crossed limit, so there’s the problem of traffic, cars,
visitors. But the real danger is if money becomes a priority. If visiting a
natural environment becomes all about money, that can damage the environment we
want to protect. Money is the biggest danger.
A. What has this project done
for the local community?
B. It has created jobs,
tourism, brought money to the local community. It has also helped to rebuild the
area. It’s an educational benefit too as well as leisure resource. It’s good
for the environment.
A. How did you think of the
idea?
B. It was a damaged industrial
area with a lot of economic problems. It had an old industry and a lot of people
who had lost their jobs. We wanted to make a difference not only to the area but
to all who live here. If we can all carry the idea and have a vision, we all can
help to make a difference to the place we adore so much.
