A great, fascinating city! Lively and lots to do. We saw the opera house and the harbour. Went to the Gold coast, zoo, vineyard and found time for sunbathing on the beach. Spent loads of money shopping. Tomorrow will be going by bus to see places where the Aborigines used to live. The nightfall is brilliant with clubs and great food. It’s extremely hot—34 degree celsius. The hotel is fabulous with sauna, swimmming pool, casino and tennis courts. See you soon.

Places: Australia is beautiful but it’s not as scenic as Switzerland .
Languages: I don’t speak French as well as I speak German.
Organizations: We have expanded more than our competitors.

<M4S§}`A~ wMYS:

A: B, you have worked in Africa and the Middle East , right?

B: Yes, I worked in Africa for five years. Last year I was based in the Middle East, which was very interesting, but am back in Germany . So for work I was abroad for 6 years. It’s good to work in different countries. You have better options, have an exposure to a variety of cultures and evolve as a better person.

A: What was Africa like? Interesting?

B: Well, may be that was the most challenging. As the operations manager, you have to push sometimes, things move slower and people need to be more motivated. Stereotyped to some extent but another business culture altogether, closer to the Germans, hence easier to handle.

A: What about the Africans?

B: They are not as professional as us. High officials are mainly expatriates who are high professionals. Africans love to entertain. Are gourmets and gourmands. The high officials have a lavish lifestyle. Africans are good people in general.

A: What about the language?

B: The official language is English and French. You need to have a working knowledge of French. They use a lot of American English words in their conversation.

A: What about the work culture?

B: Culture is pretty different. People are very open and do not think about hierarchy so much. You may communicate more freely with your boss. Since my style or strategy of management is to be open and flexible, for me it creates more possibilities to build relationships with people.

A: What about the food?

B: It’s not spicy as I normally have. But it is a mix of Mexican and Continental which I thoroughly enjoy!
